Waynesboro, Virginia is located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains and has maintained the charm of small town America. The downtown district is a Virginia Mainstreet Community and Virginia historic district. It is home to a variety of specialy shops, service providers, museums, and arts and cultural centers. The area is rich in history as Waynesboro was the site of the Civil War Battle of Waynesboro in 1865 where the forces of General Jubal Early faced those of General Philip Sheridan. There are many important historical markers of the Civil War in and around Waynesboro.
However, Waynesboro may be best known as the home of artist P. Buckley Moss and the P. Buckley Moss Museum. The museum is open to the public and houses the permenant collection of her works. The gift shop also offers original and reproduction pieces for sale.
Waynesboro has an excellent public school system with 4 elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Private school options are also available. Fishburne Military School, establilshed in 1879, is located in Waynesboro. Blue Ridge Community College, Mary Baldwin College, Bridgewater College, James Madison University, Eastern Mennonite University, and the University of Virginia are all within commuting distance.
The South River runs through downtown Wayneboro, making it one of only two urban fisheries in Virginia. Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Blue Ridge Drive, and the Applachian trail are all less than 5 miles from Waynesboro and offer an abundance of outdoor activities including hiking, camping, fishing, picnicing and skiing.
